Exploring Politics Through the Eyes of a Veterinary Assistant: Books and Documentaries Reviews

As a veterinary assistant with a passion for politics, I often find myself intrigued by the intersection of these two seemingly unrelated worlds. In my quest to understand the complexities of politics and its impact on society, I have delved into various books and documentaries that have shed light on different aspects of the political landscape. In this blog post, I will share my reviews of some of the most thought-provoking works that have helped me navigate the realm of politics as a veterinary assistant. Book Review: "Animal Farm" by George Orwell George Orwell's "Animal Farm" is a timeless classic that uses allegory to satirize the events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the subsequent Stalinist era. Through the lens of farm animals who overthrow their human owner to establish a new order, Orwell critiques the corrupting nature of power and the pitfalls of totalitarianism. As a veterinary assistant, I couldn't help but draw parallels between the power dynamics depicted in the novel and real-world political systems. "Animal Farm" serves as a stark reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant against authoritarian tendencies, no matter the context. Documentary Review: "13th" Directed by Ava DuVernay Ava DuVernay's documentary "13th" is a powerful exploration of the intersection of race, justice, and mass incarceration in the United States. The film delves into the legacy of slavery and how the criminal justice system has been used as a tool for social control, disproportionately affecting Black and brown communities. As someone who values social justice both in my work as a veterinary assistant and in my engagement with politics, "13th" was a poignant reminder of the systemic inequalities that persist in our society. It reinforced the importance of advocating for meaningful reform and holding power to account. Book Review: "The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism" by Naomi Klein Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine" offers a compelling analysis of how economic and political elites exploit moments of crisis to push through unpopular policies that benefit the few at the expense of the many. Klein examines case studies from around the world to illustrate how disaster capitalism operates, from post-9/11 America to post-Katrina New Orleans. As a veterinary assistant who witnesses the impact of economic disparities on animal welfare, "The Shock Doctrine" resonated with me on a personal level. It reinforced the interconnectedness of politics, economics, and social justice, urging readers to remain vigilant against exploitation in all its forms. In conclusion, as a veterinary assistant with a keen interest in politics, I have found that exploring books and documentaries on the subject has broadened my understanding of the world around me. These reviews only scratch the surface of the diverse perspectives and insights that can be gleaned from engaging with political literature and media. By continuing to educate ourselves and engage critically with the issues at hand, we can become more informed and empathetic participants in the political process, both in our professional lives and beyond.
